GBA Help for SUSS Students Whose Group Has Gone Quiet

A group assignment is one file, one upload and one mark, but not necessarily the same mark for everyone. Send the brief and we will show you how the marks split.

  • Built on your brief. Every deliverable, weighting and deadline read off your own document, not a template.
  • Work you can present. Walked through with you, because a group submission can be questioned at a viva voce.
  • Your details stay yours. We never approach SUSS or your tutor about your group assignment, and PDPA rules govern your files.

The basics

What Is a Group-Based Assignment at SUSS?

A GBA is graded work by a group of three to five students from your own seminar or tutorial group, submitted as one file by an elected leader.

1

One file, one uploader

Your group elects a leader who merges the sections and uploads them to Canvas. Most briefs want Word, with a cover page carrying the course code, title, names and PI numbers.

2

Shared responsibility, stated in writing

SUSS briefs state that all group members are equally responsible for the entire submitted assignment. You are accountable for paragraphs you never wrote.

3

Not necessarily the same mark

The same briefs say it is not necessary for all group members to be awarded the same mark. That sentence is the most useful thing in your brief.

Your marks

How Much of My Grade Does the Group Assignment Carry?

Published SUSS briefs range from fifteen to forty-five per cent of the final mark for the course, and twenty per cent is the most common figure. There is no single university-wide number.

What Is Actually Inside a SUSS Group Assignment?

Often several deliverables with separate weights and separate deadlines: a report, a live presentation, a slide deck, a poster or infographic, an individual worksheet and a peer-evaluation form.

Each member also completes an individual neighbourhood worksheet. A member who does not complete theirs may receive no more than half of the final GBA grade.

Your group

Who Picks My GBA Group, and How Big Is It?

Both models exist at SUSS and the brief decides. Most courses ask you to form a group of four from your own seminar group and elect a leader. HRM373 assigns groups at random.

If you form your own group

Your one piece of leverage expires in week one. Ask two questions before you agree to anything: what hours can each person work, and who is willing to be leader.

  • Agree the internal deadlines in the first meeting, not the submission date.
  • Put each person's section in writing, in the chat, where it can be pointed at later.
  • Set a check-in halfway, so silence shows up with a fortnight left rather than a night.

If you are assigned at random

You lose the selection step, so the written record becomes your only protection. One SUSS student described a group where two members did nothing and the other two carried it.

Splitting the work

Why Might My Group Get Different GBA Marks?

No, not necessarily. SUSS group briefs say it is not necessary for all group members to be awarded the same mark. Your instructor can adjust individual marks where contribution was clearly uneven.

68One group mark
Wrote two sections, merged, presentedmay sit above
Wrote one section on time68
Wrote one section, late68
Submitted nothing, did not presentmay sit below

Adjustment is at your instructor's discretion. NCO101 caps a member who skips their individual worksheet at half the GBA grade; MKT363 awards no marks to an absentee.

The free rider

What If a GBA Member Stops Replying?

You have three levers, and two close early: rebalance the work while there is time, put the gap on the record with your instructor, and fill in the peer-evaluation form honestly.

Member A

Group leader

Carrying it

Two sections, the merge, the cover page and the upload. Usually also the person chasing everyone else.

Member B

On it

Delivered

Sent their section on the internal deadline. Easy to overlook when the credit is shared.

Member C

Overloaded

Late, replying

On call, on shift, or has children. Still answering messages, so a scheduling problem rather than a free-rider problem.

Member D

Not replying

Gone quiet

No response for days, with the deadline in sight. This is the only one of the four your instructor needs to know about.

Tell C and D apart before you escalate

A member who is drowning but talking can be given a smaller piece with a date. A member who has not replied for days cannot be planned around.

What SUSS briefs say about free riding

The hardest clause we have found is NCO212's: free riders will be expelled from the group, which results in a non-submission and a zero mark.

Speaking up

How Do I Raise Uneven GBA Work Without a Fight?

Early, in writing, and about the work rather than the person. SUSS briefs tell students concerned about an inequitable distribution of work to highlight it to the instructor as soon as possible. There is no separate form or appeal route.

A sequence that keeps you out of an argument

  1. 1Ask for a date, not an explanation. One message naming the section and a specific day. It is the first thing on your record.
  2. 2Offer a smaller piece. If someone is buried at work, a defined 300 words beats an open-ended section. Many quiet members are avoiding the size of the task.
  3. 3Email the instructor while there is still time to act. Describe the gap and the dates. Raised a week out this is a request; raised the night before it is a complaint.
  4. 4Submit anyway, as a group. Several briefs deduct ten marks from a member who submits separately.
  5. 5Fill in the peer-evaluation form as it happened. Where your course has one, this is the formal record, and it is the step most often softened.
Peer evaluation

Which Courses Use GBA Peer Evaluation?

Some SUSS courses have one and many do not. There is no single university-wide peer-assessment tool, so the instrument, its name and its weight are set per course. Several briefs carry none at all.

Peer-evaluation instruments named in SUSS group assignment briefs
What it is called Course How it works Marks

Find out which row you are in during week one. If it is the last row, your written record is your whole protection.

Working together

When Does Group Work Become Collusion?

Inside your own group, working together is the task. Outside it, sharing the same work is the offence. SUSS briefs carry an explicit warning about plagiarism and collusion.

Collaboration, which is the point

  • Dividing the questions between your own members and writing them separately.
  • Reading, challenging and editing each other's sections before submission.
  • Thinking through the questions on your own first, which some briefs require in writing.
  • Getting tutoring, feedback or editing on your group's own draft, and saying so if asked.

Collusion, which ends badly for everyone

  • Sharing your group's draft with another group, in either direction.
  • Working from a previous semester's submission. One brief tells students not to share notes, drafts or final work with anyone until marked work is returned.
  • Two groups splitting the questions and swapping answers.
  • Submitting generated text as your own with no declaration, where briefs permit the tools only with attribution.

Group submissions go through Turnitin like any other, and the university reserves the right to hold a viva voce to verify authorship.

One voice

Why Does My GBA Read Like Four Different Reports?

Because four people did, and the rubric notices. NCO101 awards twenty of its hundred marks for originality, clarity and coherence, and LOG206 puts twenty per cent on written communication.

Agree the terms, not just the sections

Pick one word for the organisation, one for the customer, one for the framework, and write them in the chat.

One person edits at the end

Not to rewrite anyone, but to make the headings parallel, the tense consistent and the citations one style. Budget a day for it.

Write the joins

A sentence at the end of each section pointing to the next turns four answers into one argument. It costs fifty words.

Being leader

Who Merges and Uploads Our GBA File?

The elected group leader, once, on behalf of everyone. They merge the sections, build the cover page, name the file as the brief specifies and upload it to Canvas.

The leader's checklist, in order

  • One file, Word format, under the size limit the brief sets.
  • Cover page with the course code, GBA title, every name, every PI number and the date.
  • File name in the brief's exact pattern, underscores not spaces.
  • Right seminar group link, since the wrong folder means a formal appeal.
  • Confirm the upload succeeded. One brief states that failed or unreadable submissions are marked zero.
  • Separate submissions done too: declaration forms, worksheets or peer-evaluation forms, each on its own deadline.

Three things the leader cannot fix afterwards

Submission from a phone. The Canvas mobile app is not supported, so the upload needs a computer.

Replacing the file after the cut-off. SUSS states that resubmission is not allowed after the cut-off date, including the grace period.

Personal details left in the document. Keep NRIC numbers, home addresses and mobile numbers out of the file entirely.

If you are the leader, agree an internal cut-off a full day before the real one. The group's risk is concentrated in one person's evening.

Late submission

What If Someone Uploads My Group's GBA Late?

SUSS's marks-deduction scheme names group-based assignments explicitly. There is a twelve-hour grace period, then ten marks for every twenty-four hours, and more than fifty marks of deduction means zero. Because one person uploads for four, that deduction is shared.

What the scheme covers

The policy covers tutor-marked assignments, group-based assignments or papers, case studies and other continuous assessments, and end-of-course assessments. Quizzes, computer-marked tasks, discussion boards and laboratory reports sit outside it.

Only a system fault lasting over six hours extends that window. Work travel and National Service do not change it, and the deduction is applied automatically through the gradebook.

See the full deduction arithmetic

Why this changes how a group plans

On an individual submission, lateness is your own risk. On a group file, the slowest member sets the submission time and the whole group pays the same ten marks.

Presentations

How Do I Get Marks for a Group Presentation?

In several SUSS courses the group assignment is delivered rather than written. MKT363 is a fifteen-minute live presentation plus a deck of no more than sixteen slides.

Turning up is a mark

MKT363 states that every member must take part and that no marks go to a student who does not turn up.

Rehearse the handovers

Groups lose delivery marks in the gaps between speakers. Agree who says what at each handover, and run it once against the clock.

The deck is marked on alignment

In MKT363 four fifths of the deck's marks are for content alignment and one fifth for design. A beautiful deck that answers the wrong question scores worse.

Four ways we help

Which Kind of Group Assignment Help Do I Need?

Most groups arrive with one of four problems: nobody knows what the brief wants, a section has not arrived, the pieces do not fit, or the whole thing needs producing.

Nobody has started

Brief and plan

We read the brief with you, translate each question, show how the marks split, and give you a division of work with internal dates.

A section never arrived

Written from scratch

One question, several, or the full set, written on your brief and rubric with real sources, then walked through with you.

Draft assembled

Review against the rubric

Marked band by band on your own criteria, with comments where marks are being left behind.

Pieces do not fit

Merge, edit and format

Four sections turned into one document: one voice, consistent terms, parallel headings, a single reference list, the cover page built and the file named.

Splitting the cost

How Can My Group Split the GBA Cost?

Yes. Group work is quoted on the deliverable, not per person, so four members can share one piece of work and split the cost. The quote is fixed in writing.

Priced on what is produced

A report, a deck, a merge, or one question. The price follows the word count, the module and how much already exists, not the number of names.

One person coordinates

Usually the leader. They send the brief, confirm the scope and relay the feedback, so the instructions come from one place.

If one member is not comfortable

Then do not do it behind them. Every member is accountable for the whole submission, so a member who did not agree still carries the risk.

Modules we cover

Which SUSS Courses Come With a Group-Based Assignment?

Group work appears across every SUSS school, so coverage follows the schools rather than a fixed list. If your course is not below, send us the code.

Business, analytics and operations

ANL251 ANL252 ANL305 ANL310 BUS107 BUS204 BUS362 ECO202 LOG202 LOG206

These briefs tend to cap each answer at 500 to 600 words, so the marks sit entirely in the reasoning.

Marketing, finance and accounting

MKT202 MKT363 MKT365 FIN303 FIN379 ACC201 ACC202 HRM373

The marketing group assignments are often presentation-led, so the work is a deck, a script and a rehearsal. Finance and accounting briefs need the workings and the interpretation to agree.

Humanities and behavioural sciences

PSY369 PSS303

These are the briefs most likely to ring-fence an individual component inside the group mark, and the ones where the declaration form carries marks of its own.

Science, technology and interdisciplinary

ENG335 NCO101 NCO111 NCO212 NIE301

The interdisciplinary courses carry the most deliverables: posters, infographics, individual worksheets, progress updates and feedback forms, each with its own deadline.

FAQs

What Do Groups Ask First About GBA Help?

Straight answers on weightings, peer evaluation, free riders, submission rules, privacy and price. More in our full FAQ.

What is a GBA at SUSS?

GBA stands for Group-Based Assignment: graded work by a group of three to five students, submitted as one file by an elected group leader. It counts as continuous assessment.

How much is a GBA worth at SUSS?

Published SUSS briefs range from fifteen to forty-five per cent of the final mark for the course, and twenty per cent is the most common figure.

Is a GBA part of OCAS or OES?

A GBA is continuous assessment. Every brief we have read states the weighting as a percentage of the final mark for the course, not as a share of your OCAS.

Do all group members get the same mark for a SUSS GBA?

Not necessarily. SUSS group briefs say it is not necessary for all group members to be awarded the same mark, though all members are equally responsible for the whole submission.

How many members are in a SUSS GBA group?

Three to five, depending on the course. Four is the most common size across published briefs, formed from your own seminar group. HRM373 uses groups of five plus or minus one, assigned randomly.

What happens if one group member does not contribute?

It depends on your course. NCO212 expels free riders, which results in a non-submission and a zero mark. NCO101 caps a member who skips their individual worksheet at half the GBA grade. MKT363 gives no marks to a member who does not turn up.

How do I report a group member who is not contributing?

Raise it with your instructor as soon as possible. SUSS briefs tell students concerned about an inequitable distribution of work to highlight it to the instructor, who investigates and decides what action to take.

Does SUSS have a peer evaluation form for group assignments?

Some courses do and many do not. There is no university-wide instrument. Real examples include a Peer Evaluation form worth five marks in NIE301, a GBA Cover Page and Declaration worth ten of a hundred in PSY369, and a GBA Feedback Form in NCO212.

Does the late submission penalty apply to group assignments?

Yes. SUSS's marks-deduction scheme names group-based assignments explicitly. There is a twelve-hour grace period, then ten marks for every twenty-four hours, and a submission carrying more than fifty marks of deduction is given zero.

Can I submit a GBA individually if my group does not respond?

It usually costs you marks. Several briefs state that a member who submits individually instead of as a group receives a ten-mark deduction. Raise the gap with your instructor first.

Who submits a SUSS GBA, all members or the group leader?

The elected group leader, once. They merge the sections into one Word file, build the cover page with every member's name and PI number, and upload it to the correct seminar group link on Canvas.

Is there a presentation in a SUSS GBA?

In several courses, yes, and sometimes the presentation is the whole assignment. MKT363 is a fifteen-minute live presentation worth fifteen per cent plus a deck worth ten. MKT202 splits thirty per cent across a presentation and a deck. NCO212 includes a ten-minute in-class presentation.

Can I use ChatGPT for a SUSS group assignment?

Recent SUSS briefs permit generative tools with proper attribution, meaning the tool and your prompts are documented. One brief warns that high Turnitin similarity or a high AI-writing percentage can attract further penalties.

Can a group share one order for a group assignment?

Yes. Group work is quoted on the deliverable rather than per person, so members can share one piece of work and split the cost. The quote is fixed in writing.

Is getting help with my GBA section cheating?

Guidance, teaching, draft feedback and editing are the same support a tutor or writing centre gives, and they are most of what we do. We never submit anything on a student's behalf.
