Statutes were renamed
The 2020 Revised Edition came into force on 31 December 2021 and revised 510 Acts. Short titles now carry the year of enactment, and chapter numbers are no longer required.

Singapore statutes were renamed at the end of 2021. English authority reaches Singapore only through one Act, and on several questions the local test has replaced the English one.

Three things. Statute citation changed completely at the end of 2021, English common law applies only through a specific statute, and Singapore has departed from several English tests.
The 2020 Revised Edition came into force on 31 December 2021 and revised 510 Acts. Short titles now carry the year of enactment, and chapter numbers are no longer required.
The Application of English Law Act 1993 makes English common law part of Singapore law, as it stood immediately before 12 November 1993, and only so far as it suits local circumstances.
Since 1994 the Court of Appeal has not held itself bound by its own earlier decisions, or by the Privy Council, where following them would cause injustice or hold back development in Singapore's circumstances.
How to read this page. Legal detail goes out of date, so verify any statute or section on Singapore Statutes Online before you submit. Where this page and your module instructions differ, follow your module. This is writing support, not legal advice.
There is no single mandated student style, and pages telling you to use OSCOLA are wrong. Your module's instructions govern, and four styles are in circulation.
The style used by the Singapore Law Reports and Academy Publishing's journals, which direct authors to their own guide. It is the safest default for a Singapore law paper.
A Canadian guide, and the one the national university's law library points to for Singapore materials. Its law journal requires citations to conform to it as closely as possible.
An Oxford standard, widely used where a lecturer trained in England, and required by some modules. It is not a Singapore requirement, so use it only because your brief says so.
What you meet when a non-law module sets a question with legal content. APA defers to legal citation, and Singapore is not in the American tables, so follow Singapore legal style with a jurisdiction tag.
Because the 2020 Revised Edition rewrote how Singapore Acts are named. The Attorney-General's Chambers states that a revised Act's short title now includes the year it was enacted, and chapter numbers are no longer required.
Companies Act (Cap 50, 2006 Rev Ed)
Companies Act 1967
Penal Code (Cap 224)
Penal Code 1871
Interpretation Act (Cap 1)
Interpretation Act 1965
When you deliberately cite a historical version of an Act. Then the chapter number with the revised-edition year is right: a repealed Criminal Procedure Code with its chapter and 1985 edition, for example.
Open the Act on Singapore Statutes Online and copy the short title exactly as it appears there. Check every section number on the same site: the revision renumbered hundreds of Acts and restructured criminal law.
For subsidiary legislation the forms differ again, using regulation, rule, notification or order rather than section.
By the year, the court code and the judgment number, which together form the neutral citation: a court-approved system independent of any law report series and unique to each judgment.
| Code | Court | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| SGCA | Court of Appeal | The apex court, and the one that hears all criminal appeals |
| SGHC(A) | High Court, Appellate Division | Created in 2021 and missing from most citation lists, including some library guides |
| SGHC | High Court, General Division | The former High Court, renamed in the 2021 restructure |
| SGHC(I) | Singapore International Commercial Court | A division of the General Division, with international judges on the bench |
| SGHCF | High Court, Family Division | Part of the Family Justice Courts established in 2014 |
| SGDC and SGMC | District and Magistrates' Courts | Within the State Courts, renamed from Subordinate Courts in 2014 |
| SGPDPC and SGIPOS | Data protection and intellectual property tribunals | Where a technology or privacy question will often take you |
Singapore judgments are cited to paragraph numbers in square brackets, not to pages. The punctuation varies between the styles above, so follow your module's examples.
Where a case is reported in the Singapore Law Reports, giving the neutral citation alongside the report reference is common practice.
The Singapore Law Reports Reissue covers the 44 years from 1965 to 2009. The Supreme Court directs counsel to prefer it, and the national university's law library calls it and the original volumes equally authoritative.
Both things are true. One is about authority, the other about citation preference.
The Supreme Court now has three tiers rather than two: the Court of Appeal, the Appellate Division of the High Court created in 2021, and the General Division, formerly just the High Court.
Court of Appeal
The apex court. All criminal appeals, plus constitutional and administrative law, contempt, arbitration, corporate insolvency and restructuring, and patents. Appeals from the Appellate Division need permission, on a point of law of public importance.
Appellate Division of the High Court
New in 2021, hearing civil appeals other than those reserved to the Court of Appeal. It has no criminal jurisdiction, and most citation lists still omit its code.
General Division of the High Court
The former High Court. It is bound by the Court of Appeal, but not by another High Court judge's decision, though as a matter of comity a court rarely departs from one without good reason.
Divisions within the General Division
The Singapore International Commercial Court, which hears international commercial disputes even with no connection to Singapore, and the Family Division of the High Court within the Family Justice Courts.
State Courts
District Courts and Magistrates' Courts, which must follow the High Court, alongside the Coroner's Court, the Employment Claims and Small Claims Tribunals and the Court Mediation Centre. Renamed from the Subordinate Courts in 2014.
One thing this page will not tell you. Whether the Appellate Division binds the General Division is not something we could establish from a source we would cite. Ask your lecturer, not a website.
Carefully, and never as though they bind. English statutes apply only where the schedule to the Application of English Law Act 1993 says so, and except as that Act provides, no English enactment is part of Singapore law.
Start here, always. An answer that reaches a Singapore statute and a Court of Appeal decision has done the main job.
A practice statement in 1994, after Privy Council appeals were abolished, freed the Court of Appeal from its own earlier decisions and from Privy Council decisions. It uses that power sparingly.
Useful for reasoning, for comparison, for filling a genuine gap. Where Singapore has its own authority, the English case belongs in a sentence acknowledging a different approach, not in your rule paragraph.
Commentators also note that Singapore courts give real weight to Court of Appeal observations made in passing, because the jurisprudence is young.
Answering a Singapore negligence problem with the English three-stage test. In Spandeck Engineering v Defence Science & Technology Agency [2007] SGCA 37 the Court of Appeal set one test for duty of care in all negligence claims, whatever the damage.
Opens with the English three-stage test, cites it as the rule, and applies it to the Singapore facts. Every step is competent but the rule paragraph is wrong for the jurisdiction.
This is not a citation slip. It is applying a persuasive authority as though it binds.
States the Singapore test as the rule, with the Court of Appeal authority. Works through factual foreseeability, then proximity, then policy, referring to analogous Singapore decisions as the court directed.
If the English position is worth raising, it appears as a sentence noting that Singapore departed from it.
Before you write a rule paragraph, ask whether Singapore has decided the question for itself. Where it has, the local authority is the rule and everything else is commentary.
It does not name it, but it describes the sequence. The legal methods course asks students to identify legal sources and institutions, analyse fact patterns for issues, interpret rules, apply the law and critically discuss competing arguments.
ILAC substitutes law for rule. CRAC puts the conclusion first, which suits advice writing. MIRAT builds arguments for and against into the structure.
Application. Published teaching guidance is consistent that problem questions test whether you can apply the law to new and unique situations, so there is often no single model answer.
Reading the facts properly before identifying issues. The facts generate the issues, the issues select the rules, and the rules then change how you read the facts.
A law admission board's published examiner comments say candidates stated the law without demonstrating understanding or analysis, far too commonly. Other criticisms: stating law without citing authority, poor time allocation, and writing out the question.
The same comments describe strong answers as those that identified ambiguous facts, or where more facts would be needed, and explained how those facts would change the analysis.
A problem answer, written to a client rather than to a reader. SUSS's law outcomes separate the two: advising a client and applying law describe a problem question, while critically discussing and constructing arguments describe an essay.
| Verb | What it wants | Where marks go |
|---|---|---|
| Advise | A problem answer, reaching a position a client could act on | Application, and a conclusion that commits |
| Apply | The law worked through these facts, element by element | The bulk of the marks on any problem question |
| Critically discuss | An essay weighing competing positions | The weighing, not the summary of each side |
| Construct and deconstruct | Build an argument, then take apart the opposing one | Showing the weakness, not asserting it |
| Interpret | A statutory provision read with the interpretive rules | Naming the rule you used and why |
| Identify | Issues, sources or institutions, accurately | Completeness, and rarely more than a few marks |
If a question says advise and you produce an essay, you can write beautifully and still score in the middle. The reverse is also true.
Justice Choo Han Teck gave a legal writing seminar to the Law Society. His definition of an argument is built on facts, an appeal to fairness and justice, application, and consequences.
Integrate the authority into the proposition. Rather than listing the issues and then jumping to precedent, put the case inside the sentence that states the rule, so the proposition and its support arrive together.
Lead with your strongest argument. Open with what the dispute is about, then go straight to the best point. Do not mix narration with argument, or put law in the facts section.
These editing instructions come from the bench rather than from a style guide.
The SUSS School of Law describes its aim as developing lawyers specialising in criminal or family law, through a practice-oriented, multi-disciplinary approach that brings in sociology, social work and forensics.
Legal methods, critical thinking, legal writing and interpretation, constitutional and administrative law. Here the citation and precedent material on this page is directly examinable.
Contract and civil litigation, torts, property, equity and trusts, business organisations, wills and probate. Problem questions dominate, so the application paragraphs decide the grade.
Criminal law, procedure and evidence across two modules, family law and the Family Justice Courts across two more, Islamic family law in Singapore, and ethics with therapeutic justice. Section numbers changed in the 2020 revision.
Ethical practice and client care, mediation and trial advocacy, the final-year legal clerkship, emerging technologies, and financial reporting for lawyers. The advocacy modules are assessed on performance as well as writing.
What we will not publish. SUSS does not make its law word counts, rubric splits or weightings public, so you will not find invented numbers here. One published rule matters: you must pass both the continuous assessment and the examinable component.
Law work stalls at predictable points: spotting the issues in a fact pattern, finding the Singapore authority rather than the English one, turning a rule paragraph into application, and getting the citations right.
We read the fact pattern with you, map the issues, and identify the Singapore legislation and decisions that govern each one.
A full model answer on your question, structured as a problem answer or an essay as the verb requires, with Singapore authority properly cited.
We read it as a marker would: law stated without application, conclusions without authority, English cases used as though binding, and ambiguous facts not flagged.
Every statute checked against its current short title, every case given its neutral citation, one style applied consistently, and the adjectives taken out.

"You can tell they care. The way they corrected my ethics writeup without being judgmental… very professional. They preserved the meaning while improving the structure."
"Wasn't sure what to expect at first, but wow… their help was super friendly and clear. Guided me on how to handle case studies on elderly care and made sure I included empathy."
"I don't usually write reviews but this one deserves it. Really solid help. They explained everything from GDP to fiscal tools in easy terms. Scored higher than I expected!"
"This one deserves five stars. They helped me build my startup pitch assignment from scratch. Felt like I had a co-founder working with me. Efficient, friendly, smart."
You pay for the part you hand over. Mapping the issues costs less than writing the answer.

There is no single mandated Singapore student style, and OSCOLA is not a requirement. Your module's instructions govern. Four conventions circulate: the Academy of Law house style, the McGill Guide 8th edition, OSCOLA, and APA.
Only when you deliberately cite a historical version. The 2020 Revised Edition came into force on 31 December 2021 and revised 510 Acts. Short titles now carry the year of enactment: Companies Act 1967, not Companies Act (Cap 50).
By its neutral citation: the year, the court code and the judgment number. Numbering restarts at one each calendar year, by court. Where the case is reported, the practice directions put the current Singapore Law Reports first, then the Reissue.
The neutral citation code for the Appellate Division of the High Court, created in the restructure that took effect on 2 January 2021. It hears civil appeals other than those reserved to the Court of Appeal, and has no criminal jurisdiction.
The High Court is bound by the Court of Appeal, and the District and Magistrates' Courts must follow the High Court. Whether the Appellate Division binds the General Division we could not confirm from a citable source, so ask your lecturer.
As persuasive authority, never as binding. The Application of English Law Act 1993 keeps English common law, including equity, part of Singapore law as it stood immediately before 12 November 1993, and only so far as it suits local circumstances.
Applying the English three-stage test. In Spandeck Engineering v Defence Science & Technology Agency [2007] SGCA 37 the Court of Appeal set one test for duty of care in all negligence claims: factual foreseeability, then proximity and policy.
SUSS does not name it, but it describes the sequence. The legal methods course asks students to identify legal sources and institutions, analyse fact patterns for issues, interpret rules, apply the law and form advice. ILAC, CRAC and MIRAT are the variants.
They ask for different genres. Advise, and apply, mean a problem answer written to a client, where the application paragraphs carry most of the marks. Critically discuss means an essay in which weighing competing positions is the work.
Because it is the most common failure in law assessment. Published law admission examiner comments call it far too common, and note that knowing the law well enough to answer short questions is not adequate: you must apply it to the facts.
Flagging the facts that are ambiguous. The same examiner comments describe strong answers as those that identified ambiguous facts, or where more facts would be needed, and explained how those facts would change the legal analysis.
Sparingly, and inside the proposition. Justice Choo Han Teck told the Law Society that short quotes are better than long ones, and no quotes probably better than short ones. Put the authority in the sentence that states the rule.
The School of Law aims to develop lawyers specialising in criminal or family law. The curriculum runs from legal methods through contract, torts, property, equity and constitutional law into criminal and family law, then ethics, advocacy and a clerkship.
No. SUSS does not make them public and we will not invent them. One published rule matters: to pass a course you must pass both the continuous assessment and the examinable component. Check your own timetable for e-examinations.
No. This is academic writing support for law students, not advice on a real legal problem. Legal detail goes out of date, so verify any statute on Singapore Statutes Online. Where this page and your module differ, follow your module.
